Suspected livestock worrying

Alert message sent 19/03/2019 10:19:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch Scotland

Lothian and Scottish Borders Police received a call this morning from a farmer in the Garvald area of East Lothian to report the finding of 5 dead lambs on his land. The farmer is concerned that these young animals may have succumbed due to shock from having been chased by a dog, but at this time this cannot be confirmed. Local police would like to stress that Livestock Worrying is a crime and whenever possible it is best to avoid going near sheep/lambs whilst walking dogs. Dogs can cause unnecessary worry that may contribute to the premature death of sheep, lambs and unborn lambs. If you need to go into a field, keep your dog on a short lead and at a distance from animals. This advice applies to other farm animals and livestock. East Lothian is a great place for dogs and their owners to exercise and enjoy but please remember to be a responsible owner, and that you share the outdoors with others.
